 ASHBOURNE AZTECS UNDER 12    11    -     0    DUFFIELD DYNAMOS U12

A victory for Aztecs would guarantee the league championship so the players knew exactly what they needed to do. Aztecs kicked off and went straight for the jugular coming close on a couple of occasions before LEASON opened the scoring with a fierce shot from 10 yards. The team played some great football, Duffield struggled to clear and were limited to a few quick breaks dealt with by Russell, Wright, Mitchell and Donnely at the back. The football was a pleasure to watch with all the lads playing their passing and moving game to finish the half 6 - 0 up.
The second half was almost the same with Aztecs playing neat passing football, Duffield did have a few chances saved by Dawson in goal. Aztecs added to the score LAURIE 1, WAINWRIGHT 1, SANDERS1, PARTRIDGE2, LEASON and PRICKETT both scoring hatricks to finish 11-0 victors and lifting the championship trophy to wild celebrations and a lot of fizzy pop flying everywhere. After all their hard work and finishing second on two previous occasions they truly deserved to finish top this time.
Team: Kieron Dawson, Kyle Bond, Mathew Goldstraw, Mike Leason, Nick Partridge, Aiden Prickett, Aaron Russell, Ben Sandersw, Max Wainwright, Thomas Mc Hugh, Eddy Donnely, George Clowes, Thomas Poxon, Zack Tong, Oak Watson, Alexander Wright, Benjo Laurie, Robin van Vroenhoven and Bailey Mitchell.

Aztecs U 16’s 2 Chesapeake 1      Tues 27th April

Aztecs completed their season with their third match in five days against table topping Chesapeake and produced arguably their best performance and result of what’s been a fine season. Aztecs started brightly and set about the opposition in a determined fashion and deservedly took the lead on 15 minutes when Sadler fired home following some fine wide play from the home side. Aztecs continued to boss the midfield with Hunter, Drummond and Sadler dominating proceedings in the middle and Hall and Froggatt creating problems out wide.

The second half began well for the opposition who needed all three points to remain in the hunt for the league title and got back into the game within ten minutes of the re-start when the Aztecs defence failed to clear their lines. This spurred them on as they began to show their class with some neat passing football but chances were limited thanks to the solid back line of Walton-Gibson, Cundy, Lomas and Sanders who all put in splendid performances. The final quarter of the game belonged to Aztecs who looked the more likely to win the game. Centre forward Ebbrell worked tirelessly throughout and combined well with Froggatt to create several opportunities for the home side with Galvin and Sadler failing to capitalise. Aztecs were finally rewarded for their endeavours with five minutes to go when Riley and Ebbrell combined well to set up man of the match Sadler who fired home the winner. This result was a credit to the team, and ensured they finished fourth in the league table.

Stanton Ilkeston U13's

Ashbourne Aztecs U13's

A spirited Stanton Ilkeston team gave Ashbourne a few scares and victory was not quite as convincing as it would appear.  The Home team lie at the foot of the table and deserve credit for their hard work and commitment.

Ashbourne began the game quite well, but never played the passing football which would have really opened up the home team's defence.

Stanton Ilkeston took the lead against the run of play and although Ashbourne continued to press, the football was still not convincing.  However, at half-time they led the game 3-1.

The second half performance was better, as Aztecs finally began to string a few passes together.  They rattled in a few nice goals and secured a valuable 3 points.

Ashbourne Aztecs U13's are now up to fifth in the table.

Goalscorers:  Charlie Wibberley (2), Nick Peach (2), Sam Goddard, Joe Harris, Jordy Wibberley, Jordan Hydes.

Man of the Match: Sam Forrest.

Major, Bunting, Forrest, Wibberley (C), Harris, Peach, Goddard,

CHAMPIONS –ASHBOURNE AZTECS U10’S

Chinese lanterns and giant party poppers took off from the Polo Ground, Osmaston, last Thursday evening, as Ashbourne Aztecs u10’s celebrated the winning of their division in the Derby Mini Soccer League (photo below).  Unaffected by this victory, the u10’s went on to win two more games this weekend, giving them a 14 point lead over 2nd placed Belper, with just a single match remaining for both teams.

Ashbourne Aztecs u10’s 2, Stanton Ilkeston 0

The first game of the weekend was against Stanton Ilkeston, this was a tough encounter last time around when Aztecs played them ‘away’, the home fixture was no different.  From the first whistle, Stanton used their strength rather than their skill to prevent Aztecs from scoring.  It was down to Aztecs’ top goal scorer, Ocran, to do his stuff.  Despite him being heavily marked, he let one fly into the back of the net to give Aztecs the lead.  Minutes later a penalty was awarded for handball in the area, Legrice stepped up to the mark for Aztecs, and belted a neat shot into the bottom left hand corner to make the score 2-0.  Excellent defending from Smith and Dean, cracking goalkeeping from Burton, together with strong performances from Rosewarne, Zona, Reed, Bowers and Jennison all prevented Stanton from pulling any goals back.  Man of the match was awarded to defender Will Smith.

Ashbourne Aztecs u10’s 2, Duffield Dynamo Eagles 0

2 was the favourite number for the u10’s team this weekend, as Aztecs achieved their 2nd 2-0 victory.  This match was far more skillful than the previous day’s, both teams played excellent football, passing the ball about and creating chances for each other, really good team performances.  Aztecs kept attacking Duffield’s goal, testing their keeper, but for the first 15 minutes Aztecs failed to find the back of the net.  Continuing his good form of the previous day, Ocran set up an excellent goal for Rosewarne to complete in the box.  Just before the half time whistle, Ocran ran down the right wing, took on Duffield’s defence, found himself ‘one on one’ with the keeper, calmly dribbled past him, and then slotted the ball neatly into the back of the net.  As with Saturday’s game, the excellent goal keeping from Burton, together with strong defending from Smith, Dean and Farr, all prevented Duffield pulling any goals back in the second half.  Legrice and Zona for Aztecs attempted more shots at goal, but these were cleaned up by Duffield’s keeper.  Man of the match was awarded to defender Jack Dean.

Team for Sunday’s fixture:  Rosewarne, Zona, Reed, Burton, Legrice, Smith, Dean, Farr, Warner & Ocran

Ashbourne Aztecs Under 11s            3

West Hallam Tigers Under 11s         1

Aztecs recorded their fourth consecutive victory in their last match of the season after an excellent team performance. They went on the attack from the start, with Major looking lively up front and bringing the wide midfielders Scott and Griffiths into the game early on. Griffiths also combined well with Birks and Dutton on the left, putting in some dangerous crosses.

West Hallam had a few chances but full backs Cahill and Pepper were up to the task. Dutton then went on a surging run into the box and fired in a strong shot which the goalie could only parry away. McDonald-Lowe was on hand to tuck away the rebound to give Aztecs a deserved lead. West Hallam fought back and after a period of pressure on the left, they forced a corner. Although the ball was partially cleared, it fell to the opposition, who equalised with an unstoppable shot. Apart from this, Ashbourne keeper Owens coped comfortably and his centre-backs Lee and Unsted work well together to clear any danger.

The midfield continued to dominate and made good chances for Major and Scott, who both went close. Ashbourne forced a succession of corners, all well delivered by Birks and from one of these, Dutton headed home for number two.

Aztecs were unlucky not to go further ahead, when Scott was denied a goal by a very close offside decision. A few minutes later, Dutton’s bullet header appeared to cross the line, but the referee waved play on. Towards the end of the half, Ashbourne played some lovely flowing football, particularly on the right where Cahill, McDonald-Lowe and Keeling passed the ball around neatly.

In the second period, Aztecs picked up where they left off, tracking back in defence and chasing down lost causes in attack. Major forced another save from the West Hallam keeper and more dangerous crosses rained in from Birks. Griffiths dropped inside to allow Brown some good mazy runs on the left, whilst Owens was dangerous with his direct runs up the middle. Field and McFall came on as replacements and both played solidly at the back, infact the defence did not allow one scoring opportunity at all in the second half, apart from a couple of corners. Keeling was industrious on the right wing and caused all sorts of problems, despite picking up a kick on the foot. He worked several openings and eventually set up Owens who struck a ferocious shot to make the game safe. Well done to every player in the squad for their contribution towards a thoroughly deserved win.

Team: B.Owens, Cahill, Lee, Unsted, Pepper, Scott, Birks, Dutton. McDonald-Lowe, Griffiths, Major, Keeling, Field, McFall, C.Owens, Brown.

Ashbourne Aztecs U13's

Ashbourne travelled to the suburbs of Ilkeston on a bright and sunny spring morning.

It was a successful away day, but certainly not without controversy and tribulation.

Aztecs were much the stronger team in the first half and created countless goal scoring opportunities.  At half time they led 3-0.

After an extended half time, allowing Ilkeston to re-group, the second half began and Ashbourne found themselves on the back foot.

A successful 30 yard effort and a comical penalty decision, gave Ilkeston the encouragement they needed; but Ashbourne rallied strongly and showed great character to push on and win the game comfortably.

Aztecs played a nice passing game today and are beginning to look like a team to be reckoned with.

Goalscorers:  Sam Goddard (3), James Handley (2), Louis Anthony.

Man of the Match: Sam Goddard.

Major, Bunting, Forrest, Wibberley (C), Harris, Anthony, Goddard,

Castle Donington Jets 0 – Aztecs u10's 1

With volcanic ash affecting the team selection and illness causing the absence of the manager there was a strange feel to this Sunday’s game.  Just like the attempt to erect the goal by the temporary management team (see below), Aztecs start was a little unsure.  Donington made all the early running but were restricted to long range efforts by Aztecs defence.  After 10 minutes play Aztecs began to create chances themselves with Rosewarne skimming the cross bar, Bowers only inches away and Legrice calling upon the jets keeper to make a fine save.

The second half started in much the same way with very little penetrating past Jennison and Legrice in midfield and whatever did make its way to the goal mouth was dealt with securely by Burton in the Aztecs goal.

In the final quarter the fresh legs of Reed and Zona were wearing down the jets defence and after hitting the cross bar with a fine effort Zona scored the only goal of the match after a scramble in the Donington goal mouth.  The remainder of the game saw Reed battle on after some hard challenges and Legrice continue his mastery of midfield airspace and very little got past Smith and Dean in the Aztecs defence.

This result shows overall what a strong team the under 10’s have this season with strength in depth and everyone pulling their weight to rightly maintain their top of league status.  Man of the match went to Burton for handling everything that came his way.

Team: Burton, Smith, Dean, Legrice, Jennison, Bowers, Rosewarne, Reed and Zona.

Ashbourne Aztecs Under 11s           7

GAD Khalsa Under 11s                    0

After a slow start, Ashbourne ran out worthy winners against GAD Khalsa. The first ten minutes was a tense affair, with the Aztecs defence a bit tentative and the midfield failing to get the ball under control on a hard pitch.  However, Dutton and Keeling began to impose themselves on the right hand side and set up Owens for the first goal. Winbow was working hard down the left but just could not get the final ball into the danger area. Cahill played a key role in the centre of midfield and passed to Banks, who took a speculative shot which went through the GAD goalkeeper’s legs and into the net to make it 2 – 0 at the break. The back four gained confidence as the match went on, Bailey and Field tackling better, and Lee and Wildgoose covering any loose balls. Keeper Sherry kept his concentration throughout, despite having few touches in the game. Aztecs were now controlling the game and pushing forward at every opportunity. Allcock came on in a new role up front and immediately got himself on the score sheet. Dutton then set Banks up for his second with a sweet shot from the edge of the box. Cahill reverted to full back and worked well down the right with Keeling and Birks, the latter cutting the ball back from the by-line for Allcock to tap in his second goal. Two long shots by Dutton were saved by the GAD keeper, who also kept out Griffiths and denied Banks his hat-trick. There were then several goalmouth scrambles, where Ashbourne came close to adding more goals, the closest being Keeling’s shot which hit the post. Challinor came on and instigated more play on the left, working well with Griffiths. A neat pass was flicked on to Dutton, whose shot was handled by a GAD defender. Birks converted an excellent penalty kick. The game was rounded off three minutes from time when Challinor won another ball in midfield and set up Griffiths, who cut inside and hit a thunderous shot into the far corner, making it three wins in a row for Aztecs.

Team : Sherry, Bailey, Field, Lee, Wildgoose, Keeling, Dutton, Cahill, Winbow, Owens, Banks, Allcock, Birks, Griffiths, Challinor.

ASHBOURNE AZTECS UNDER 10’S SUCCESSFULLY ACHIEVED A DOUBLE WIN IN ONE WEEKEND:

Redwood Rockets 1, Ashbourne Aztecs u10’s 10

Aztecs under 10’s knew they had a big weekend ahead playing fixtures on both Saturday and Sunday, the latter of the two being against 2nd in the league Belper Town. On the Saturday fixture, there was no holding back against the Rockets.  The previous encounter at home finished with a single goal between them, and Aztecs just managed to gain the 3 points.  This time around, it was Aztecs and not the Rockets who were on fire, they dominated the game from start to finish with goals coming from Legrice, Rosewarne, Reed, Bowers and a hat trick from Ocran.  The constant pressure on Rockets caused them to concede 3 own goals, making Aztecs 10-1 winners. Man of the match was awarded to Liam Jennison.

Ashbourne Aztecs u10’s 2, Belper Town Gold Sox 1

The Sunday fixture was a different ball game.  Belper knew that they had to be focused and determined, as a draw or a loss would give them only a slim chance of winning the league.  Aztecs u10’s also knew that a win was critical to give them a six point lead with a game in hand.  Belper had two brilliant players upfront, one of which was in contention for leading goal scorer in the league.  Aztecs knew that they had to mark these two players out of the game, Jennison and Reed fulfilled the jobs perfectly with hard energetic play.  Belper’s first 10 minutes play gave Aztecs some worrying times, but Aztecs started to come into the game and push back Belper’s attacking play.  With a strong wind helping Belper’s play, a sigh of relief went out from Aztecs’ when the half time whistle blew, the score was 0-0, and Aztecs would now have this same advantage in the second half.  It was the Aztecs players’ strength and fitness that shone through and it was down to Ocran, with a goal mouth scramble, who gave Aztecs the lead.  Reed, who was also having a brilliant game was testing the keeper with some long range hard shots and managed to slot one past the keeper to give Aztecs their second goal.  Minutes later, confusion in Aztecs’ goal mouth, put Belper back in the game with their first goal.  Full time approaching, Belper found extra energy to try and pull out a draw, but with Smith and Dean in defence, together with keeper Burton pulling off some fine saves, there was no big come back.  The final whistle blew, Aztecs had kept their run of sixteen games unbeaten intact.  Man of the match was awarded to Sam Legrice

Team for both fixtures:

Burton, Smith, Dean, Legrice, Jennison, Reed, Ocran, Bowers, Rosewarne, Warner.

Ashbourne Aztecs Under 11s           13

Allestree Juniors Under 11s             1

Ashbourne ran out easy winners in a game that they dominated throughout. They started brightly and soon took the lead with a lovely clean strike by Charles Owens. Good forward play down the wings by Scott and Griffiths created several chances for the front players. Banks added two quick goals, the second a firm header from Scott’s pinpoint cross. Owens then finished a good move down the left with another accurate shot.

Dutton was his usual energetic self in defensive midfield, winning numerous balls and setting up more attacks. Birks played an offensive midfield role which led him into more scoring positions just outside the box. He took his chances well, with two stunning strikes, one with each foot. After squandering a few opportunities, Scott and Griffiths got their rewards with close range finishes to put Aztecs eight up at the break.

A touch of complacency caught Ashbourne out at the beginning of the second period, when Allestree saw more of the ball and forced their first corner of the match. A misunderstanding in the defence resulted in the substitute tapping in for their only goal. This spurred Aztecs into more urgency. They created lots of scoring chances, especially cutting in from the wings, but the Allestree keeper was in fine form and managed to keep out shots by Major, Keeling, Brown, Birks and Dutton.

The defence of Bailey, Pepper, Yates, Unsted and Lee were rarely in danger and captain Billy Owens in goal had very few saves to make. Keeling, Birks and Dutton continued to set the forwards free and eventually Brown managed to finish two chances when one-on-one against the keeper. After a series of good corners from Birks, Owens completed his hat-trick and Major finally found the net with an instinctive strike in the box. On the few occasions Allestree posed a threat, Lee and Bailey were particularly alert and kept the strikers very quiet with some good tackling. A final breakaway by Keeling set Scott free and he raced from his own half up the right flank, crossing to set up a final goal by Griffiths to make it lucky thirteen for Aztecs.

Team : B. Owens, Bailey, Pepper, Lee, Unsted, Yates, Banks, Dutton, Birks, Griffiths, C. Owens, Scott, Keeling, Major, Brown.

Ashbourne Aztecs U13's

A cold and windy morning at Sinfim Moor Park is not everyone's idea of fun, but Aztecs had a relatively enjoyable couple of hours, taking a point off an improving Gad Khalsa team.
The home team made a strong start and scored quite early on, from a "goalmouth scramble".
Ashbourne gained momentum during the first half and were well on top when Nick Peach went on a run from the half way line, to score with a low drive into the bottom corner.
The second half continued much as the first, with Aztecs the stronger team.
Gad Khalsa had some possession, but only one clear chance on goal.
Ashbourne had opportunities to take all three points, but a winning goal was just not to be.
Sometimes a draw is a fair result, but not today.  Ashbourne deserved the win.
Goalscorer:  Nick Peach.
Man of the Match: (for some brave defending):  Will Bates.

Major, Bunting, Wibberley (C), Harris, Anthony, Goddard,

Chesapeake U16’s 1 Ashbourne Aztecs U16’s 1

Aztecs travelled to title contenders Chesapeake and on a heavy pitch produced a fine battling performance to come away with a share of the spoils. Despite losing the influential Mann to a serious injury in the opening minutes Aztecs dominated the first half and deservedly took the lead on 20 minutes when Hunter kept his cool to fire home a cross at the far post. The centre midfield trio of Drummond, Sadler and Cresswell continued to dominate their counterparts and looked sharper and more determined in the tackle. The defence of Sanders, Cresswell, Cundy and Walton-Gibson again showed they were more than a match for the highly rated Chesapeake forwards and, aided by keeper Akers who pulled off two splendid saves, Aztecs deservedly came in at half time 1-0 up.

Fearing an end to their season long unbeaten run Chesapeake came out in the second half looking determined and began to dominate possession. Aztecs did well to keep their shape and discipline and restricted the opposition to long range efforts. Sadler was effective in the air and Cresswell showed his technical awareness to get forwards Ebbrell and Froggatt involved. With 20 minutes to play hesitation in the heart of the Aztecs defence in dealing with a high ball enabled Chesapeake to pounce and fire the ball into the bottom corner of the net. The last quarter of the game was a tense affair with Chesapeake having several chances to snatch the points but a combination of some dogged defending and poor finishing ensured the points were shared. This result and performance gives Aztecs title hopes a boost with nine points still to play for.

Match Reports for the weekend Saturday 27th & Sunday 28th March

 Duffield Dynamo’s U 18’s 2  Asbourne Aztecs U18’s  3

A fourth consecutive win saw Aztecs climb to fourth place, as they got off to a bright start scoring within 5 minutes after Broom put Coates through to hammer in the first goal.

Both sides could have scored in the first half, with Murphy in goal keeping his side in the game when it mattered ably supported by a robust defence of Gadsby, Harby, Cheshire and Etherington. The highlight of the half was a 30-yard volley from Bell, which brought a superb save from the keeper.

Aztecs had high expectations when play resumed but it was Duffield who shocked the away side by scoring two goals within 10 minutes. However, this jolted Aztecs into action with Sanders pace on the left beginning to cause problems and Todd and Chris Cloake in midfield making some telling runs and passes.

Broom almost bagged the equaliser and minutes later the irrepressible Coates turned the defenders to rifle in a well placed second.

Walker- Sharpe and Sanders pressed the home team with some probing crosses and Cust combined with Slater on the right who skipped past the defender and slotted the winner past the keeper at the near post.

Next week Aztecs travel to top club Santos who they beat at Mappleton earlier in the season.

Ashbourne Aztec Lions 4

Little Eaton Diamonds   0

Aztec Lions were desperate to win this game as Little Eaton Diamonds are just above them in the league.

The Lions roared from the whistle with midfielders Linley, Sims and Simpson-Allsop pushing the oppositions half with lone striker Lumbard straight into the box.  Next minute the ball was in the back of the net.

Pressure was kept on the Diamonds and with Massey and Bryan clearing the odd ball in their defence, play was all in the Diamonds half.

Ten minutes on Lumbard found the net again.

Putting Dixon in midfield and Hellaby in defence made it impossible to penetrate and leaving keeper Cranstone to have an unusually quiet time.

Second half was played similar to the first, with the speed of Linley and Sims 2 more goals were scored on the counter by Sims.

Man of the match was Dominic Simpson-Allsop

Ashbourne Aztecs Under 11s           6

Heanor Lions Under 11s                  1

After a string of recent defeats, this was a welcome Aztecs win over Heanor. Ashbourne had a shaky first few minutes which required a smart save from keeper Sherry, who was captain for the day. After that, the back four of Bailey, Yates, Wildgoose and Unsted settled and supported each other well as a unit, tackling strongly and covering any through balls comfortably. Yates had his best game to date, with some tenacious tackling and link-up play on the left side. Birks played a solid central role, setting the wingers and strikers free to run at the Heanor defence. Both Winbow and McDonald-Lowe got behind their full backs, but their shots were not powerful enough to trouble the opposition keeper. Major also managed to penetrate the defence, but another shot went straight into the goalie’s arms. It was Scott’s pace up front which did most damage and he was able to convert two long runs with fierce strikes to make it 2 – 0. Birks joined the attack and added a third before half-time with an assured finish from 10 yards. After the interval, there were a series of goalmouth scrambles which Aztecs just could not put away, Major, Challinor and Keeling all going close. The Aztecs defence coped well with a spirited comeback by the visitors, with Unsted particularly impressive. But Ashbourne could not deal with the second ball and a Heanor player pounced to tuck away a deserved goal. Challinor, Birks and McDonald- Lowe then had to busy themselves by closing down the Heanor midfield. Keeling was an effective replacement who worked hard down the right and gained his reward with a brace, the second being a fine solo effort and precise finish. Dutton and Cahill then came on to push the team further forward and were involved in some tidy passing movements with Birks, Winbow and Keeling. Alcock added some drive as he made several chances for Winbow and Scott on the left but their shooting was again too close to the keeper. Cahill completed another move with a low drive which he hit just past the post. In the last ten minutes, Dutton took up a more offensive role and found himself dribbling into the penalty box with just the keeper to beat. His composed finish completed a satisfying 6 – 1 victory.

Team: Sherry, Bailey,Yates, Wildgoose, Unsted, McDonald-Lowe, Alcock, Birks, Winbow, Scott, Major, Challinor, Keeling, Dutton, Pepper, Cahill.

Spondon Dynamos  U 18’s 2  Asbourne Aztecs U18’s  5

After many weeks of cancelled games, Aztecs continued their campaign by recording their 3rd consequetive win but only after a shaky start. Thanks again to Jack ‘the cat’ Murphy’s acrobatics in goal, Spondon were denied several times in the first half . Spondons  first goal had a touch of fortune when Murphy punched a corner which rebounded off Gadsby head for an own goal . However Aztecs pressure told when Sanders rifled in the equaliser to end the half 1-1.

The second half saw a much more determined Aztecs with Bell , Etherington , Todd and Chris Cloake starting to take control of midfield.Against the run of play Spondon scored a fine individual second for 2-1.

Harby and Gadsby began to dominate in defence and Walker-Sharpe and Cheshire attacking from the flanks forced Spondon on the defensive and from close quarters Etherington cleverly backheeled the equaliser . From a Broom cross Etherington’s  side footer put his side in the lead at 3-2.

Broom caused problems on the left combining with Sanders and Broom neatly added the fourth firing inside the near post.  Bell and Chris Cloake interchanged passes and Todd Cloake went past two defenders to lash in a fine individual fifth ending the game 2-5 in Aztecs favour.

Ashbourne Aztecs  u10’s              1

Aztecs met the very strong Spondon side on Saturday, who’d given them a battle last time they met, and this time was no exception.  The midfield two of Legrice and Farr were holding and preventing Spondon from pushing forward.  Ocran and Rosewarne, Aztecs’ strikers, were facing similar frustrations with Spondon’s defenders, who were stopping them getting anywhere near the goalmouth.  New tactics were needed, Legrice and Farr began to test the goalkeeper with long range shots, but the back of the net was eluding them.  Half time approaching,

Legrice picked up the ball in midfield and slotted it through to Ocran, who ran from the halfway line, took on two defenders skillfully pushing the ball past them, his speed left the opposition trailing as he came ‘one on one’ with the goalkeeper.  Ocran cooley placed the ball past the keeper to put Aztecs infront.  2nd half started with Aztecs playing confidently and good accurate passing was giving Aztecs more opportunities at goal.  Spondon had very few chances at Aztecs’ goal, as the defence of Dean and Smith were again pulling out all the stops to give an excellent performance.  Keeper Burton, sharp once again, calmly grasped every ball that came his way.  With all the players on top form, the 3 points were deservably Aztecs’ for the taking, but Spondon didn’t give up, and gave Aztecs a nervous last couple of minutes until the final whistle blew.  The under 10’s retain their top spot in the division, man of the match was awarded to Kaylem Ocran, for the winning goal.

Ashbourne Aztecs Under 11s        0

Codnor Boys Under 11s                 3

After a mediocre performance last week, Aztecs really upped their game this week and were unfortunate to go down to three goals in the last quarter. Their commitment was excellent, with the packed midfield of Keeling, Challinor, Birks, Dutton and Brown pressuring the ball in the Codnor half for much of the first period. On the odd break by the opposition, defenders Lee, Wildgoose, Cahill and Yates dealt with the danger comfortably, whilst goalkeeper Owens provided a safe pair of hands in the slippery conditions. Ashbourne played the better football, with some flowing passing movements between Birks, Keeling and Dutton. Major played as the lone striker and showed much endeavour, but for all their pressure, Aztecs could not get the vital breakthrough in the final third of the pitch. The nearest they came was a scuffed shot from Birks on the edge of the box and from a corner on the right which eventually fell to Keeling, who was unlucky to see his shot hit the side netting.

After the break, Codnor were a different proposition, much more competitive and alert. However, Ashbourne still had the measure of them on the flanks. Griffiths showed good pace on the left and McDonald- Lowe and Keeling were linking up well on the right. A determined run by McDonald-Lowe culminated in a stabbed pass to Birks, whose strong shot was spilled by the keeper. The ball rebounded into Banks’ path but his right foot shot was screwed wide with the goal gaping. Codnor took immediate advantage of this miss and finished a good move on the left with a curling shot past Sherry. The substitute keeper took a number of clean catches before conceding another from a tidy control and finish from close range. Aztecs’ energy levels began to drop in the last ten minutes and Codnor’s confidence grew. Despite throwing the Owens brothers up front for a final push, it was the visitors who completed the scoring with a sharp shot from the edge of the penalty area.  The 3-0 scoreline was harsh, given the teamwork and effort put in by every player, which bodes well for the run in.

Team: B.Owens, Sherry, Cahill, Wildgoose, Lee, Yates, Keeling, Dutton, Challinor, Birks, Brown, McDonald-Lowe, C.Owens, Griffiths, Major, Banks.

AZTEC’S MAINTAIN WINNING STREAK

 Ashbourne Aztec’s U18s 3 Woollaton Hall U 18’s 1

Fortunately for Aztecs, Jack the Cat Murphy was on top form in goal to thwart the visitors on numerous occasions with some stunning saves. Least said about the general first half performance the better as it ended 0-0.

However after the break Aztecs began to shake off the effects of the previous nights party and began functioning like a team, with Bell, Todd and Chris Cloake and Etherington in midfield closing down the play and creating chances for Sanders and Coates. It was Woollaton who took the lead with a scrappy goal, which shook Aztecs into action. Gadsby and Harby at the heart of the defence were in determined form to break down out any further attacks from the visitors, and Cheshire and Cust used the flanks well to pressurise Woollaton and when the ball broke in the box for Etherington he rifled in a fine shot to level the scores.

Todd Cloake caused problems for the visitors with his determined tackles and probing passes and Coates fired in a shot, which rebounded back to him and this time he composed himself by hitting a looping drive into the roof of the net for 2-1.

Sanders tested the visitors with his pace and series of crosses from the left and the goal of the game saw Sanders cross for the predator Coates to head in his second to end the game 3-1.To Woollatons credit they battled throughout.

Next week Aztecs continue their campaign with a trip to Spondon.

ASHBOURNE AZTECS U15'S 1 - 3 DUFFIELD DYNAMOS

Aztecs started well in a very strong cross wind creating a number of half chances, on 20 minutes a through ball to CARTER saw him cut inside a defender an smack a low shot into the bottom corner to open the scoring. Aztecs pushed on but time after time chances went begging Waring pulled a fantastic save from the keeper Coxon ,Carter Wibberley  and most of the mid field had half chances but just before the break Duffield drew level from a shot just outside the box.

The second half was more even with the wind a major factor blowing all passes to our left, off a free kick Duffield went ahead which was disappointing as again we had had some good chances but not put them away, play continued and off a corner the ball was cleared but shot back in taking a deflection to beat the keeper for number three. Aztecs tried to get back into the game but Duffield shut up shop and defended in numbers so ran off 3-1 victors. Again missed chances were to blame for the loss as we could have been out of sight by the break if we had taken even a third of them, but a hard working performance by all the team and credit to them for their good football and ability to create the chances we just need to put a few more into the net, man of the match was awarded to Leon Edmondson for a strong performance in the heart of mid-field.

Team: Donnely,Wibberley, Partridge, Austin, Greatorex, Lynn, Edmondson, Sears, Carter, Coxon, Waring, Campbell, Newbold, Taylor.

A large and expectant crowd, gathered on a blustery morning, to support the improving Aztecs team.  It was always going to be difficult to play good football in the windy conditions, but after a woeful start Ashbourne really gave it a go.

They were always the stronger team and after the deadlock was broken on 20 minutes, the floodgates opened.  At half-time it was 7-0.

The second half followed a similar pattern, but to their credit, Ilkeston never gave up and on a rare soiree into the Ashbourne half, they scored what was only their second goal of the season.

The game ended 8-1, with Ashbourne failing to build up a really big score.  They had numerous attempts on goal and continued to play some nice football, but were denied in equal measure by some fine goalkeeping, the crossbar, the post and the offside flag.

Castle Donnington U 9's 2   v    Ashbourne Aztecs U 9's 2

The game kicked off with Castle Donnington on the front foot making Ashbourne's defense of Stephen Elliott and Alice Shelton work hard.  Ashbourne soon got into the pace of the game and forced Castle Donnington into five consecutive corners which disappointingly didn't end in a goal.  Finally the pressure put on by Ashbourne paid off with Max Guest playing a good through ball to Matthew Bacon who ran through to place a good left footed shot into the bottom corner.  After half time Ashbourne kept going forward pressing for another goal but were caught out twice on the break being punished both times to make the score 2 - 1 to Castle Donnington.  To the credit of the Ashbourne team they didn't give up and kept working hard and pushing forward with purpose.  Finally they got the reward they deserved, an attack ended in a corner which Max Guest lashed into the net giving the keeper no chance.  Donnington hardly had chance to kick off before the final whistle went, leaving Ashbourne feeling unlucky only to finish with a draw and not a win which they deserved.

Ashbourne Aztecs Under 11s                        1

Ilkeston Town Juniors Under 11s                 6

Aztecs were beaten comprehensively by title-contenders Ilkeston Town in the end but they battled valiantly till the end. Ashbourne’s midfield were slow to get off the mark and did not compete well enough in the central areas. The few offensive opportunities in the first period were created on the left hand side where Griffiths and Brown worked well in tandem. But as in many games this season, promising build up work could not be converted into serious chances on goal. The defence of Owens, Lee, Field, Bailey and McFall contained the lively Ilkeston attack for a short period but were caught out by two balls over the top, which were both coolly finished to give the visitors a 2 – 0 lead at half time. This could have been four or five if it had not been for Owens’ heroics in goal and some fine last ditch tackles by Field and Bailey.

Second half changes saw Major and Scott brought on to boost the forwards, whilst Unsted and Pepper reinforced the defence. But their speed on the break brought the opposition two further goals in quick succession. For a brief spell, Aztecs played some neat passing football which involved Dutton, Allcock, Major and Griffiths. One such move resulted in the ball being laid off to Major, who hit the bar with a swerving shot from the edge of the penalty box. Ilkeston then added two more goals, one a long range chip and the last a lovely solo effort which gave Hollis his hat-trick. Despite their tiredness, Aztecs kept trying to get the ball forward and Scott and Griffiths had a couple of runs past their full backs on the wings. They finally got their reward when McDonald-Lowe set up a chance for Owens, who made no mistake with a low right- foot drive.

Team: B.Owens, Bailey, McFall, Lee, Field, Unsted, Scott, Dutton, Birks, McDonald-Lowe, Griffiths, C.Owens, Brown, Major, Pepper, Alcock.

Match Reports for Sunday 7th March

ASHBOURNE AZTECS U15   9 – 0   SHERWIN U15

Aztecs started well passing the ball with accuracy and carving out some good chances, on five minutes CARTER ran the ball forward and as the keeper came out lobbed the ball over him and into the net to open the scoring. Edmondson played a through ball and COXON was onto it and lobbed the ball over the keeper for No 2. Lynn had a powerful shot parried by the keeper and EDMONDSON headed the rebound back into the net. Waring crossed into the area, the ball was cleared out for COXON to fire in a spectacular over head kick into the back of the net. Sherwin did push forward, the back four of Wibberley, Partridge, Jackson and Greatorex broke up every attack and soon had the ball forward to mid field to attack again. A great run from mid field by SEARS saw a great shot from 25 yards, the keeper getting a hand to it but unable to keep it out for 5-0 at the break.

Sherwin started the stronger creating some chances Donnelly saving well on a number of occasions, again Aztecs played some great passing football and NEWBOLD let drive from 25 yards into the bottom corner for 6-0. Good play from Taylor found CARTER who shot from 10 yards with such venom the keeper could only turn it onto the post and in. WARING who had been a thorn in Sherwin’s side all day eventually got his chance off a through ball and a 50/50 with the keeper getting a foot in first to guide it into the net for no 8. Aztecs play was at times excellent the keeper making some fine saves to keep the score down but after good build up play Newbold crossed in for CARTER to pick his spot with a fine header for his hatrick and Aztecs No 9. It was a great result but the best part was the quality of the play from all the lads, we just need to take this performance into the next match. Man of the match was awarded to Jack Carter for his three goals and great support and constructive football.

Team: Donnelly, Wibberley, Partridge, Greatorex, Jackson, Lynn, Edmondson, Carter, Sears, Coxon, Waring, Newbold, Taylor.

The early frost had thawed and conditions were almost perfect.
Ashbourne hit the ground running, against a supposedly stronger opposition and stunned the home team with an early goal.
Mackworth pushed on, but could not break down Ashbourne's midfield and defence.  Ashbourne maintained their ascendancy and the goals just kept on coming.

West Hallam 2, Ashbourne Aztecs u10’s 4

Aztecs’ position at the top of the league seemed to have put pressure on the players of late, as their performances had seemed a little shaky.  On meeting the inform West Hallam, the players put aside their anxieties and nerves, returning to their old ways with an outstanding performance.  Aztecs started strong with Ocran and Zona upfront, giving Hallam’s defence a nightmare, with shots at the home team’s goal.  Farr and Jennison in midfield were energetic but it was Farr, from distance, who looked up, kicked the ball with the outside of his foot , curving it high and hard into the top corner of the net to put Aztecs infront.  West Hallam’s heads didn’t drop as they struck back with quick runs and shots at Aztecs’ keeper, Burton, who confidently kept collecting the ball into his grasp.  West Hallam’s players were pushing forward but were getting out of position and leaving their midfield and defence open for Aztecs to take advantage of more goal scoring opportunities.  Ocran was ‘on fire’ as his runs down the right wing left the home players in his shadow, and he was the next to get on the score sheet with a long range shot which found the keeper grasping air, as the ball thundered into the net.  2nd half Aztecs started the game in the same manor, as within minutes substitute Rosewarne ran down the left wing, rocketed the ball, giving the keeper no chance of saving.  Aztecs knew that if they sat back, West Hallam would take advantage, but any attacks from West Hallam were cleaned up with ease by defenders Dean and Smith.  Striker Ocran’s run again down the right wing, past two West Hallam players, came across their defender where he paused, checked, and crossed the ball with precision to substitute Jack Bowers, who volleyed the ball, scoring his first of the season.  Minutes remaining West Hallam pulled two goals back from set pieces, from corners, but the game was all over. A really solid performance meant Aztecs retained their top spot remaining unbeaten after 11 games.  Man of the match, Jack Bowers.

AZTECS U15 – 0 / 1 – SPONDON DY YOUTH U15

Aztecs started well against the top of the league team pushing them back into their own half Jackson Coxon and Greatorex all pulling saves from the keeper. Gradually Spondon put their mark on the game Carter in goal made two excellent saves firstly a powerful free kick turned over the bar then a goal bound shot beaten away. The rest of the first half was aggressively contested with some crunching tackles going in, Wimberley, Sears, Partridge and Waring in defence cleaned everything up and the mid field of Campbell, Jackson, Edmondson and Austin fought for every scrap of the ball, Greatorex looked to have opened the scoring but another fine save kept the score goalless at the break.

Aztecs again started very strong but could not break the deadlock, Spondon broke quickly and looked very dangerous as they have players who can finish but Ashbourne still looked the likeliest to score. Turner, Newbold and Lynn added new vigour to the attack which pushed forward in numbers trying for the goal which would settle the match but a quick break saw Spondon home in on gaol Carter saved the first shot brilliantly but the ball was played back in and in the scramble Spondon managed to stab the ball home for what turned out to be the winner. Aztecs tried in vain for the equalizer but it was Spondon who took all the points. A disappointing result but a very strong and gutsy performance from the whole team who over the whole of the match were the strongest side against one of the best sides in the first division. Man of the match was awarded to Jordan Campbell for a strong and tireless  performance in the mid-field. TEAM:  Carter, Wibberley, Sears, Partridge, Waring, Campbell, Edmondson, Jackson, Austin, Coxon, Greatorex, Turner, Newbold, Lynn.

Ashbourne started the brighter of the two sides with Palmer-Clark and Elliott dominant in defense.  In mid-field A Gerrard, Joannou and Thompson ran the game feeding the ball through to Bacon who was working hard up front.  Midway through a competitive first half Ashbourne took the lead after a good shot from A Gerrard was spilled by the keeper and Thompson followed in well to put the rebound in the net.  After the goal the game was very even, with half time looming a break away by AFC saw them level with a good shot into the bottom corner of M Gerrard's goal giving him no chance.  After half time the game was very even with both sides playing some good football. Shelton was working hard up front, as the game swung in Ashbourne's favour with more good play.  Ashbourne took the lead again, a good clearance from Palmer-Clark was chased into the corner by Joannou who robbed the defender and picked out Thompson in the box, who fired a crisp shot into the bottom corner of the AFC net.  The game continued with AFC putting Ashbourne under pressure pushing for an equaliser.  AFC had a couple of corners which resulted in the equalising goal.  The last 10 minutes were very even and the score finish 2 all which was what both teams deserved, a point from a well fought game.

This game should really have been all over by the interval, but Ashbourne went in at half time with just a 1-0 lead, thanks to a nice goal from James Handley.

Ashbourne had created countless opportunities, been denied a penalty and when a shot from Louis Anthony appeared to have crossed the line after coming off the bar, it looked like it might not be Aztecs day.  Castle Donnington began to get into the game during the early part of the second half and brought out some good saves from Goalkeeper, Luke Major.  However, a cool penalty from Jordy Wibberley, after James Handley had been brought down, gave Ashbourne the cushion they needed. Dan Hodkinson and Simon Bott passed the ball well from midfield, linking well with Jack Ford and Sam Goddard.  The defensive pairing of Joe Harris and Charlie Wibberley looked very solid and full-backs Dan Bunting and Sam Forrest gave little away.  Aztecs played patient, passing football and victory was sealed with goals from Will Bates and Charlie Wibberley.

Man of the Match: Sam Forrest.

West Hallam Tigers Under 11s        2

Ashbourne Aztecs Under 11s           1

In a game of few goalscoring chances, Aztecs went down 2 – 1 but were unlucky to come away without at least a point. Following a long lay off because of the winter weather, Ashbourne looked a bit rusty during the first ten minutes, especially the defence of Sherry, Field, Lee , Wildgoose and Pepper. They were on the back foot from the start as West Hallam attacked down both flanks and Aztecs found it hard to clear their lines. When they did get a strong foot in, the ball ricocheted off Challinor and fell kindly to a Tigers forward who finished with a firm strike into the right top corner of the net. This rallied Aztecs, who began to string together their passes, with some neat interplay between Keeling, Dutton, Challinor and McDonald Lowe. Griffiths was also a threat on the left wing and went close with a driving run which he couldn’t quite convert. At the other end, West Hallam had a golden chance to add to their tally when their centre-forward was clean through on goal but Sherry was out quickly and made a super save with his feet. The last ten minutes of the first half was Ashbourne’s best spell as they become more confident going forward. Major was holding the ball up better and laying it off to McDonald-Lowe, Dutton and Whittaker-Birks, who were beginning to dominate the midfield battle. A determined run from the half way line by Dutton was halted on the edge of the penalty area by a crunching foul. From the resulting free kick, Major angled in a fine shot which was touched onto the cross bar and then gathered by the home side’s goalkeeper. But Aztecs got their reward for their endeavours soon after.  From a free kick on the right, Major launched a good cross, which was only partially cleared. Keeling drilled in a low shot, which the Tigers’ keeper could only parry and McDonald-Lowe provided a neat finish for the equaliser. The second half was very tight, with both defences dominating. The new central defensive partnership of Lee and Wildgoose was working well, with both players tackling and covering well, with help fromYates. Substitute Winbow showed some skilful touches and tried to get Banks and McDonald –Lowe in behind the West Hallam back line, but without success. There were a few slick Tigers’ passing moves on the right but the final product never troubled replacement keeper Owens, who was alert to any danger. Wildgoose had his best game to date and Challinor worked extremely hard in midfield, but the only genuine chance was carved out by Dutton for Whittaker –Birks, whose shot was blocked on the edge of the penalty box. At the other end, Aztecs were comfortable until they conceded two late corners in the dying minutes. The second of these was headed out by Dutton, but Aztecs were not alert to the second ball and a Tigers player sent in a stinging shot which was deflected past the unlucky Owens for the winner.

Team: Sherry, Owens, Field, Pepper, Yates, Lee, Wildgoose, Keeling, Dutton, Challinor, Griffiths, Whittaker-Birks, Winbow, Banks, Major, McDonald –Lowe.

Melbourne United 1, Ashbourne Aztecs under 10’s 3

Aztecs came across a really strong side in Melbourne, whose position in the league did not justify their capabilities.  An early goal from Aztecs was what was needed to try and tame a very determined Melbourne.  It was Farr whose run down the right wing led to him shooting hard and low into the corner of the net, out of the keeper’s reach, and achieving that early goal.  Melbourne’s spirit was only dampened for a minute before they started to press forward giving Aztecs’ midfield and defence some difficult times.  It was up to keeper Burton with his quick reactions, to keep Aztecs in front.  The game was turning out to be end to end play, it was then Melbourne’s keeper, who prevented shots from Ocran and Reed reaching the back of the net, who stopped Aztecs getting further in front.  They were worrying times for Aztecs, as Melbourne seemed to be playing more in Aztecs’ half.  A run down the wing from Melbourne drew the players towards the ball, and a cross saw an unmarked Melbourne Striker with time to place the ball past Aztecs’ keeper to level the score.  Aztecs had to sharpen up and be more creative, if they were to come away with any points at all.  It was Reed who slotted a lovely positioned Ball in front of Ocran, who ran on goal, paused, and put the keeper the wrong way to bring Aztecs back into the lead.  2nd half Melbourne came out with more fight and a hard shot destined to fly into Aztecs’ goal, saw keeper Burton pull off the save of the day, tipping it over the crossbar.  Aztecs’ defenders of Smith and Dean were now playing more positively, and Dean confidently pushed forward which changed the game, and gave Aztecs more of the ball, keeping the play mostly in Melbourne’s half.  Left winger Rosewarne got himself on the score sheet, he accepted a cross and bagged his goal to put Aztecs 3-1 up.  Zona entered the field for Aztecs giving fresh legs and created chance after chance, but his goal eluded him.  Minutes to go ‘til the final whistle, Melbourne took a corner quickly, which flew into Aztecs’ goalmouth, the defence were caught out, but Aztecs’ keeper cleared the ball off the line.  Final whistle blew, a hard fought 3 points to keep Aztecs on top.  Man of the Match Harry Zona.

The game started very evenly with most of the game being played in midfield, where Adam Gerrard, Alex Moss and Alice Shelton competed well.  Ashbourne were the stronger side with Moss making the Sherwin keeper make a good save to keep the scores level.  Ashbourne's keeper Michael Gerrard had the quieter first half due to some top defending by Stephen Elliott and William Palmer-Clark.

Half time came with Ashbourne on top and the scores level.  The second half started with two changes Oliver Thompson and Constandino Joannou coming on.  Once again Ashbourne were the better side creating chances and also some good defending at the other end.  Midway through the second half Adam Gerrard won the ball well in midfield, set off on a surging run down the right wing, put the ball in a crowded box where Matthew Bacon beat two defenders to the ball to lash a sharp left footed shot into the top of the net, leaving the Sherwin keeper no chance.  The game continued much in the same vain with Ashbourne driving forward and the defense led by man of the match Stephen Elliott stopping anything the opposition could create.  The final whistle went giving Ashbourne a well earned win.

Ashbourne Aztecs U16’s 1 Mickleover 95 U16’s 0

Aztecs made it 7 wins out of 9 on Sunday to go second in the table. The game was highly competitive between two equally matched teams and the referee did well to keep things under control. The first half saw the battle lines drawn in midfield with Hunter, Drummond and Mann proving they were up for the challenge on behalf of Aztecs. Consequently there were few chances created at either end, with Hall having the best opportunity for the home side but steered his effort wide.

The second half began well for Mickleover as they looked to get forward but with Akers in goal and Cundy in the heart of the Aztecs defence in particularly good form, the score remained level. Aztecs then began to show a dogged determination and took control of possession and looked the more likely to take the advantage. Several chances were created but a lack of composure in front of goal ensured none were taken. Injuries led to changes but Akerman and Sadler continued the physical battle in midfield and Ebbrell, playing his first game of the season following an injury, led the front line well. Aztecs were finally rewarded for their endeavours when the hard working Drummond slotted home with 10 minutes to go following fine work from Froggatt down the left.

This result sets up Aztecs U16’s for some tough league game in the following weeks and also a cup semi-final appearance.

BELPER TOWN JUNIORS U15  1  -  1  ASHBOURNE AZTECS U15

Play started even with both sides testing each other out. Aztec’s defenders Wibberley, Partridge, Sears and Austin dug in and supplied the mid field with good service enabeling them to gain the better hand and create good chances. On ten minutes Greatorex crossed for COXON to smash home the opening goal for Aztecs. Campell, Edmondson, Jackson and Lynn all worked hard on a heavy pitch but could not add to the score, Turner and Newbold added fresh legs to the play but it remained 1-0 at the end of the first half which the Ref mistakenly cut short by 5 minutes. Belper started the second half well and the game ebbed and flowed with both teams going close. Carter made a couple of saves but wasn’t troubled at all, Campbell broke away but the keeper saved well, Greatorex broke through but shot wide, With 35 minutes on the clock Belper fired in a free kick which struck Edmondson on the arm the Ref pointed to the spot. The kick was taken well just inside the post giving Carter no chance. Aztecs Kicked off and the Ref blew up for full time again cutting the half five minutes short which was very disappointing. Yes the rules do say that each half has to be the same time but there was no reason when I pointed out his mistake at half time with all the players still on the pith he could not have played the full 40 minutes. It was a disappointing result but again missed chances have cost us points. Man of the match was awarded to Liam Jackson for a full blooded performance in mid-field.

BURTON League Under 14’s Division One

24th January 2010

Ashbourne Aztecs (U14) 2 Vs Newhall Tigers (U14) 1

A confident start by Aztecs but Tigers competed well, and were well organised. Ten minutes in Nathan Lee pushed a diagonal ball through to Jake Smith who beat the defender and slotted home the ball to make it 1-0. Tigers looked dangerous and gained a few corners and managed two good shots that were just wide but Aztecs held firm until half time.

Tigers started the second half well and pushed Aztecs back, Aztecs failed to close down the ball as it was cleared from the box and Tigers shot deflected slightly and found the back of the net. Aztecs dug deep after the goal and had several chances in the second half with Jake Smith up front, Josh Dales, Alex Munro Jones, Alex Harrison all combined well in midfield and created numerous chances thwarted by both the off side rule and some good defending. Dales and Smith combined well with some good passing around the box which left the defence in tatters, ultimately leading to a penalty for Aztecs. Joe Redfern stepped up from the centre of defence where he had a solid game and fired the penalty to the keepers left with power to make it 2-1. Aztecs under 10’s      12

Aztecs u10’s find themselves back on top of the league with their eighth consecutive win.  Even though Aztecs had not played for the last 6 weeks, they started their new year positively with clinical passing and creating chance after chance.  The away fans didn’t have to wait long before Farr netted his first of four goals.  Front three of Farr, Ocran and Rosewarne were so sharp and giving the Centurion’s defence a nightmare.  The game was all Aztecs with Reed getting on the end of a low hard cross to bag his goal to put Aztecs 5-0 up.  Half time approaching, a ball crossed into the box saw the goalkeeper come out to clear, only for Legrice, who was on the halfway line, to receive the ball, and seeing the keeper off his  line, shot a high dipping ball over for the best goal of the day.  2nd half brought substitutions of Jennison and Zona to continue the pressure and within 5 minutes, Jennison ghosted past Centurion’s defence to put away his first goal of the day.  Aztecs now 7-0 up could have sat back, as they knew the game was won, but quite the opposite.  They continued the hard work pressing forward with Legrice adding two more goals for his hat trick. Ocran tucked one away, Jennison added  another and Rosewarne also got on the score sheet.  A good solid performance, Aztecs came away with 3 points.  Man of the match Sam Legrice.

Ashbourne Aztecs u10’s Lions     2

The Lions took on an extremely skilled Duffield side on Sunday, after a 6 week break from matches due to the snowy weather.  Aztecs came out fully refreshed and with batteries fully charged.  From the first whistle, the Lions dominated the game, Callum Hellaby worked hard for every ball and Tom Dixon in midfield worked tirelessly.  When Duffield made any advances towards goal, they were stopped in their tracks by Dominic Simpson-Allsop and Ben Bryan in defence.  The Lions had better shape than in previous matches and were passing the ball about with ease.  Jake Sims took a long range shot at goal, and placed the ball neatly into the back of Duffield’s net for Aztecs.  Peter Linley worked hard throughout the game, his throw- ins accurate and swift, to Marcus Lumbard and Jake Sims up front.  Matt Fearn gave his all, gaining balls for Aztecs and passing them accurately to fellow players.  Just before half time, the Duffield Falcons pulled a goal back, which was impossible for goalie Alex Cranstone to save.  The second half, the Lions came out more determined than ever, they weren’t going to settle for a draw this week. Marcus Lumbard scored a pearler of a goal in the first few minutes of the second half, and although Duffield tried to regain composure and advance towards goal, they were halted by the ever strong Jake Massey at the back.  With every player having a brilliant game, it was hard to take anyone off, but bringing on substitute of  Ryan Yates, strengthened the team even further, as he gave fresh legs to the side and an extra burst of energy.  The Lions never sat back, Alex Cranstone pulled off some excellent saves from corners in the last few minutes.  All the Aztecs players threw themselves into their goal mouth to defend right until the final whistle blew.  A well deserved 3 points for Aztecs Lions and a good start for 2010.  Man of the match was awarded to Marcus Lumbard for his winning goal.

ASHBOURNE AZTECS U16’s 7 HEANOR JUNIORS U16’s 4

Aztecs played hosts to second division Heanor in the Challenge cup on Sunday and eventually booked their place in the semi-finals, despite some below par performances from the usually dependable defence.

Aztecs started the game well and the lively Froggatt opened up the scoring on 15 mins. He doubled the advantage shortly after, heading in a fine cross from Hunter and Hall made it 3-0 with a header on the half-hour mark. Aztecs then seem to press the self-destruct button and allowed Heanor back into the contest. A combination of poor marking and a failure to clear their lines led to the visitors scoring 3 goals in 10 minutes and come in at half time level.

Thankfully Aztecs began the second period like they had the first. Midfielders Akerman and Drummond ensured the home side enjoyed plenty of possession and Mann restored the advantage, firing home a corner from close range. Heanor continued to pose a threat on the break and levelled the game at 4-4 when the Aztecs defence again gave Heanor far too much time and space. Aztecs main threat was from the precise set pieces taken by Hunter and the impressive Mann headed home his second following one of these. Hall was then rewarded for his fine wide play when he converted at the far post following another good cross from Hunter. Froggatt completed the goal feast by scoring his hatrick with a fine individual effort in the dying minutes.
